Simulation of the rainfall–runoff relationship using an HEC-HMS hydrological model for Dabus Subbasin, Blue Nile Basin, Ethiopia

Abstract Hydrological modeling is important to provide relevant hydrologic information from limited data. In this study, Hydrologic Modeling System (HEC-HMS) was used simulate the rainfall–runoff relationship for Dabus subbasin of Blue Nile Basin. Daily precipitation and stream flow data 2002 2019 were as key input model, together with soil land use/land cover data, a digital elevation model study area. Arc-GIS employed in combination Arc Hydro HEC-GeoHMS tools terrain processing translating spatial into files HEC-HMS, respectively. Model calibration done 2014, while validation 2015 2019. Nash-Sutcliffe simulation efficiency (NSE), observation standardized ratio (RSR), coefficient correlation (R2) assess performance model. With NSE, RSR, R2 values 0.784, 0.334, 0.816 calibration, 0.793, 0.323, 0.875 validation, flows found good agreement observed values. Therefore, HEC-HMS can be utilized predict ungauged catchments measured rainfall proper water resource planning management.
